The Chundawat Family of Mewar

The Chundawats take their name from Rana Chunda, eldest son of Rana Lakha of Mewar, who gave up his right to the throne so that his father could remarry. This sacrifice earned him the title Bhishma of Mewar, and his descendants became one of Rajputana's great warrior clans. The Deogarh branch belongs to the Sangawat subclan.

Shatrunjai, son of the late Rawat Nahar Singhji II, now runs Dev Shree with his sons, Mahadhriti and Bhagyaditya, who trained at WGSHA, Manipal, and worked with Oberoi, Taj, and Mandarin Oriental before returning home.

The Rawats of Deogarh: A Line Recorded Since 1521

The family's link to Deogarh begins in 1521, when Sangaji Chundawat was granted the estate and became its first Rawat. His son Dudaji helped defend Chittor during Akbar's siege of 1568 and rode in Maharana Pratap's vanguard at Haldighati in 1576. In 1670, Rawat Dwarka Dasji laid the foundation of the present town of Deogarh.

The family history records 15 Rawats of Deogarh, the last being Rawat Nahar Singhji II, who taught at Mayo College from 1958 to 1982 before retiring to Gokul Vilas on Ragho Sagar Lake, where Shatrunjai grew up. Each generation, from Sangaji to Nahar Singhji II, is traced in the history of the Rawats of Deogarh.

A Newly Built Home Inspired by Traditional Mewar Architecture

Shatrunjai looked to Udaipur for the design, drawing on Bagore ki Haveli and the City Palace, and the house follows the traditional style of 1675. Local artisans spent nearly 2 years carving its pillars from Nimbahera stone, while arched doorways and stained-glass fanlights carry the Mewar character through the suites. A central courtyard modelled on a Moroccan kasbah pulls sunlight into the house, and deep verandas look across a wide lawn to Ragho Sagar Lake, with Gokul Garh fort in view.

A Kitchen Fed by Our Garden and Farm

Dining at Dev Shree never comes from a fixed menu. It is curated fresh each day around what guests enjoy and whatever the kitchen garden and farm have ripened that season. By evening, it has become a spread of Rajasthani and Indian dishes, cooked the way the family eats at home.

Royal Suite: Spanning 1,000 sq. ft. and hosting up to 4 adults and 2 to 3 children, this is our most generous suite, with a separate seating area and a coffee machine that make it the better pick for longer stays or for families who want room to spread out.

The Sundowner Rural Ramble is an evening jeep drive through the villages, tailored to whether farming, cultural sites or scenery interest you most. Closer to home, a 3.4 km lake walk passes historical sites and Potter’s Street, and the artisan walk begins right outside our gates, winding past pottery and miniature painting to the bustling local market.

For something unexpected, the rural rail ride takes a small metre-gauge train down the Aravalli hill section from Kamblighat station, where you may share a carriage with a wedding party or pilgrims. Early risers can hike the 10 km Sand Mata trail through scrub forest to a hilltop temple.

The Heritage Circuit: Kumbhalgarh, Ranakpur, and Deogarh

Two of Mewar's great 15th-century monuments lie within a day's drive, both tied to Rana Kumbha, whose birthplace near Madaria later passed to the Deogarh family. With Deogarh as the start, they form a 3-stop route through the Aravalli Hills.

Deogarh: Begin with the lake walk, the artisan quarter, and the Shiva cave temple at Anjana.
Kumbhalgarh Fort: Around 118 km away, Rana Kumbha’s fort is ringed by a wall of about 36 km and is part of the 6 UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan (Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amber, and Jaisalmer).
Ranakpur Jain Temple: Roughly 103 km away, this temple to Adinath was built by Dharna Shah under Rana Kumbha’s patronage and is known for its 1,444 carved marble pillars.
